What is a photovoltaic system?

A photovoltaic system transforms solar energy directly into electrical energy.
It is essentially made up of:
° photovoltaic modules or panels;
° an inverter, which converts the direct current generated by the modules into alternating current;
° electrical panels and connection cables.

The modules consist of cells made out of semiconductor material, the most commonly used of which is crystalline silicon. They comprise the active part of the system since they convert solar radiation into electrical energy. Photovoltaic systems can be connected to the electricity distribution grid (grid-connected) or directly to single applications (stand-alone), typically to ensure the availability of electrical energy in isolated areas.
